Description
Bukom Kenkey – 2 Balls (800g) | Authentic Ga Fermented Corn Dumpling | Fresh Ghanaian Kenkey | Ready to Heat
From the heart of Accra — Bukom Kenkey, the fermented corn dumpling that every Ghanaian knows 🇬🇧
Bukom. The name alone carries weight in Accra. One of the most storied, most culturally vibrant neighbourhoods in the entire city — the home of Ghanaian boxing legends, the birthplace of generations of Ga culture, and the source of some of Accra’s most authentic Kenkey. When Bukom Kenkey is made, it is made the right way — the Ga way — with fermented corn dough, proper technique, and generations of knowledge behind every ball.
Kenkey is Ghana’s most iconic street food. That firm, slightly sour, deeply satisfying fermented corn dumpling that has been feeding Accra’s coastal communities for centuries. The food that the Ga people call Komi. The Fante people call Dokono. The food that comes wrapped and ready to heat — served with fresh pepper, fried fish, shrimp, or shito — and eaten with your hands the way it was always meant to be.
The Ingredient
🌽 Fermented White Corn Dough — whole white maize, naturally fermented using the traditional Ga method that gives Kenkey its characteristic mildly sour, tangy, deeply earthy flavour — the flavour that no dry mix or powder can fully replicate. The fermentation develops the corn’s natural complexity and makes the dough significantly more digestible than unfermented corn. Cooked until firm, wrapped, and ready to heat and serve.
Bukom vs Labadi — Which Kenkey?
Both are authentic Ga Kenkey from Accra — but from two distinct and culturally proud coastal neighbourhoods:
- Labadi Kenkey — from La Labadi, one of Accra’s most beloved coastal Kenkey-making communities
- Bukom Kenkey (this product) — from Bukom, one of central Accra’s most storied and culturally vibrant neighbourhoods — home of Ghanaian boxing, Ga heritage, and authentic coastal cooking
Both deliver genuine Ga Kenkey — customers will choose based on brand loyalty and personal preference.
What Makes Kenkey Special
✅ Authentic Ga Kenkey — fermented the traditional way ✅ Named after Bukom — one of Accra’s most culturally proud neighbourhoods ✅ Mildly sour, deeply earthy, characteristically tangy Ga flavour ✅ Firm, cohesive texture — holds together when served ✅ Naturally fermented — no artificial flavours or preservatives ✅ Naturally gluten-free — pure fermented corn ✅ Naturally vegan — honest ingredients only ✅ 2 generous balls per pack — 800g total — plenty for a full meal ✅ Ready to heat — minimal preparation required
How to Heat
🫙 In boiling water (recommended): Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Place the Kenkey balls (in their wrapping) into the boiling water. Heat for 15 minutes until thoroughly warmed through. Remove, unwrap, and serve immediately
🍽️ In the microwave: Remove outer wrapping. Place on a microwave-safe plate. Heat on medium setting for 4–5 minutes until piping hot throughout. Turn halfway through. Allow to stand for 1 minute before serving
How to Serve
Break off pieces with your fingers and dip or pair with your chosen accompaniments. The slightly sour flavour of Kenkey is the perfect counterpart to the bold heat of fresh pepper sauce and the richness of fried or smoked fish.
