Description
Pika Frozen Minced Okra – 200g | Finely Chopped Okra | For Nigerian Okro Draw Soup & Ghanaian Okro Stew | Ready to Cook
The draw is in the mince — frozen okra, finely minced and ready for the most authentic Okro soup 🇬🇧
Okro soup is what is known as a “draw soup” in Nigeria. When made properly, it should have a thick, viscous texture — sometimes described as slimy — from the okra. It literally draws or pulls and stretches when lifted. Duabaaforfoods
And the secret to that draw? The mince. Mincing half or more of the okro in a food chopper helps the okra develop that viscous consistency — the more minced okra used, the thicker the soup will be and the more draw it will have. SWIISH
Pika Frozen Minced Okra does that work for you. Pre-minced, frozen at peak freshness, and ready to go straight from the freezer into your pot. No chopping. No grating. No mess. Just the draw.
The Ingredient
🌿 100% Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) — fresh whole okra pods, finely minced and immediately frozen to lock in their natural colour, flavour, and characteristic mucilaginous quality. Okra is an Africa-wide favourite that is indigenous to West Africa. The word okra comes from the Igbo word ọ́kụ̀rụ̀ of southeast Nigeria. Akshit
Known across West Africa by many names:
- 🇬🇭 Nkruma — Ghana (Twi/Fante) | Betri / Fetri — Ghana (Ewe) | Engmomi — Ghana (Ga)
- 🇳🇬 Okro / Okra — Nigeria | Ila — Nigeria (Yoruba) Nirwana Foods
Why Minced Okra — Not Sliced?
The format matters enormously in West African cooking:
- Minced/finely chopped (this product) — maximises the draw and viscosity. Pureeing or mincing the okra produces the thick, viscous texture — the more minced okra used, the thicker the soup and the more draw it will have. The essential format for authentic Nigerian Okro Draw Soup Duabaaforfoods
- Sliced (rounds) — produces a chunkier, less viscous result — preferred for dishes where you want visible pieces of okra

How to Use
🍲 Nigerian Okro Draw Soup: Heat palm oil in a pot. Add onions, crayfish, locust beans (Iru), seasoning cubes, and your choice of protein (assorted meat, smoked fish, dried fish). Add stock or water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat before adding okra — cooking okra at very high heat reduces the mucilaginous texture. Add the Pika Minced Okra and stir well — simmer on medium heat for 8–10 minutes until the okra has developed its characteristic draw. Serve with fufu, eba, semolina, or any swallow Duabaaforfoods
🥘 Ghanaian Okro Stew (Fetri Detsi): Finely chopped okro that turns out as more of a soup than a stew — the Ewe version from Ghana’s Volta Region. Fry onions and tomatoes in palm oil, add seasoned fish or meat, stir in the minced okra and simmer for 10–12 minutes. Serve alongside banku — the classic Ghanaian Okro stew pairing. 🌍 Mixed Okra & Egusi Soup: Add a portion of Pika Minced Okra to your Egusi soup base for extra draw, body, and that characteristic Nigerian sticky texture
Tip: Remove as much excess water as possible from frozen okra before adding to soup — excess water from thawing can dilute the flavour and texture of the soup. Squeeze gently in a clean cloth or allow to drain fully before adding to the pot. Duabaaforfoods
